Frequently Asked Questions

Are STR products UL listed?
Yes, PHOTOCAP® products are UL listed.  Please visit our About Us page for copies of our UL certificates.
Does STR have the capability to produce a co-laminated polymer or other material to EVA?
Yes, we currently make ETFE/EVA, PET/EVA, EVA/glass scrim. For more information, please contact Customer Service in your Region.
What are the pros/cons of buying a thinner encapsulant?
The pro is obviously cost but the cons have to be considered when engineering a module with thinner encapsulant.  For instance, thinner encapsulant may not have the mass to be an adequate buffer for stresses caused when other materials in the module expand/contract with temperature.  Thinner encapsulant must be tested for adequate electrical insulation properties and environmental protection properties.
What does the self primer do?
The self-primer (designated as a "P" suffix) is blended with the encapsulant resin prior to extrusion and the resulting encapsulant may be bonded directly to module surfaces during lamination without a separate priming step.  The primer is extremely hydroscopic, therefore care should be taken to minimize the encapsulant to open air moisture or humidity.
What does your material cost?
Cost of material is based upon volumes and formula purchased. For more information, please contact Customer Service in your Region.
What is STR's product availability?
All products are available throughout the world.  For more information, please contact Customer Service in your Region.
What is the shelf life of PHOTOCAP®?
STR products are packed in a vacuum-sealed bag containing a desiccant and carries a 9 month warranty (from the date of manufacture).
What is the difference between UF, UFP and PL?
UF means "User Friendly" and is a proprietary technology employed at STR to create NO SHRINK encapsulant products.  UFP designates a paperless UF option, resulting in minimal shrinkage.  PL is paperless material that has a greater tendency to shrink but is perfectly acceptable for use.
What thicknesses can you manufacture?
We are able to produce many different thicknesses.  Our standard thickness is 0.46mm (460 microns/18 mil). For more information, please contact Customer Service in your Region.
What widths are you able to manufacture?
We are able to produce widths from 381mm (15”) to 1994mm (78.5”).
Where are STR's current manufacturing sites?
Our current manufacturing locations are: Shajiabang, China, Asturias, Spain and Johor, Malaysia. Our Technical Center is located in Enfield, CT, USA.  For more information, please contact Customer Service in your Region.
Why is a global manufacturing capability important to global customers?
Internal back-up of duplicate capacity, built in disaster preparedness, reduced shipping costs and lead times, and quick order fulfullment.
